WHAT IS GUZZLER?
Each truck that is designed and built
reflects years of hands-on experience,
and the founders pledged to make the specific
needs of contractors the driving force
behind all product development. Today
as part of Federal Signal Corporation,
Guzzler is the world's leader in industrial
vacuum loaders that efficiently clean
up industrial waste or recover and recycle
valuable raw materials and the philosophy
remains the same - to serve the needs
of industrial contractors and the plants
they serve.
Designed to vacuum a full spectrum of
materials - from solids and dry bulk powders,
to liquids, slurries, and thick sludge
- the Guzzler line represents leading
technology for today's environmental protection.
Guzzler products are ideal for removing
accumulations from remote or inaccessible
areas and have the widest range of offloading
options available. These vacuum loaders
have a proven record of superior performance
in a variety of industries including cement
plants, steel mills, railroads, oil refineries,
chemical plants, foundries and power-generating
stations.
And most importantly, every unit engineered
is simple to operate, easy to maintain
and built to last.
This is why we continue to use the Guzzler
range as it is not restricted to one particular
material removal allowing the debris and
other matter identified within leachate
wells to be easily removed.

Power to Wind
Current Renewable Obligation Certificates
(ROCs) are now allowing advanced gasification
plants to qualify for ROCs, which increases
the potential for alternatives to landfilling,
therefore contributing to the The Waste Strategy
targets of waste to landfill being reduced
by 30% by 2010 (defra factsheet). In
addition from April this year the Government
will be offering double ROCs for advanced
gasification plants. Statements made to the
New Energy Focus intimated that bidding for
non-recyclable waste may result in this waste
being worth £200-£300/tonne!
However these schemes will typically take
5 years upwards from conception to commissioning
and are likely to be sensitive with regards
to planning considerations. These incentives
by the government and the increased landfill
tax burden ( defra - will have increased to
£48/t in 2010/11) are more likely to
generate income for the government rather
than increase the change from landfill to
alternatives as the alternatives have to be
in place for there to be a clear option. This
can possibly be ratonalised by the steady
production of construction/demolition waste
produced - around 90million t/annum.
However landfilling of this sector increased
by 28MT to landfill (5%) increase and decreased
by 8% - 15MT for that being taken to exempt
sites. Many would say this is as a direct
result of planning issues- at local government
level- in obtaining exempt sites - but
at a tax levy of £2.00/t there are other
incentives I imagine.

SPACE
ISSUES/ACCESS ISSUES
What do we do? Well we are probably best
known for desilting landfill gas wells and
leachate wells. We do undertake many other
services and these are detailed on the back
of our new letterheads and listed on our
website. An area that is extensively used
in a number of applications is desilting/jetting/CCTV
within a Confined Space. The types of applications
for confined space entry are endless and
we have used this particular technology
in power stations, water works, swimming
pools, large diameter groundwater wells,
composting tanks etc etc. All our personnel
are trained in Confined Spaces and are able
to operate our specialised equipment within
the very tight parameters of these applications.
With regards to the groundwater well, access
was required in order that we could retrofit
additional pipework to the base of the chamber
in order to satisfy concerns held by SEPA.
Work at the swimming pool involved CCTV
of an area that was being investigated for
potential repairs to the infrastructure
beneath the public swimming area. Depending
upon the nature of the Confined Space we
will visit site and inspect all available
drawings to ensure that our access points
and escape points are clear. Many of these
applications also involve unsociable working
hours or accommodating plant shutdowns in
order to minimise disruption to ongoing
operations.
