Failure of wells is extremely common, applying technology to maintain these can and does improve the long term financial issues.
Recent CCTV surveying has identified early signs of failure of pipework and poor construction details. Still many view leachate manholes/MP etc as an excuse ' to put in any old thing' or the extremists who design chambers that would be stable at the height of the Empire State Building!!
Obviously there is a compromise for each specific proposed use of a well. However the old saying of ' the foolish man built his house upon the sand' rings true with many of the surveys that we have undertaken. These wells and siderisers could be the source of a wealth of information about the waste as well as saviours in the event of challenges. This would incur a small cost element at construction stage but this should be in proportion to their longevity.
The bulk of the failures can be attributed to the wrong application of pipework and inadequate surround and the modes of failure back this up.
With technology so advanced a 10% cost saving on the average cell drainage ( renewable materials?) could provide a cell with an additional 4 to 5 wells.
Failures of wells are more common than most would like to believe!
